Positions:
Commissions and positions after I was educated at the university have all been connected with research, education, cultural heritage and museum work within the fields of medieval archaeology and history.
Since autumn 1994: Professor of medieval archaeology, Department of Archaeology, UiB
Until autumn 1998 also director of Bryggens Museum.
In the years 1988-1998: Director of Bryggens Museum.
Earlier positions: Senior Lecturer and head of section at Bryggens Museum (1984-1988), lecturer same work place (1979-1984). Research fellow at the Medieval Collection, Historical Museum, and University of Bergen (1973-1979). Research fellow, UiB (1973).

Research activities:
Thematically my research has been concentrated on the agrarian society, rural conditions in the Middle Ages, and urbanisation. In several studies I have integrated a gender perspective.
