Friedrich-Alexander Universität
Erlangen-Nürnberg

Situated in Franconia (northern Bavaria), the two cities of Erlangen and Nürnberg lie less than 20 kilometres apart in the heart of Germany. You can easily reach Erlangen and Nürnberg by air, rail, and motor-way. Erlangen with its 100.000 inhabitants is very much a small university town and has retained much of its old-fashioned quietness. Nürnberg (Nuremberg) has 0.5 million inhabitants and offers a wide variety of modern urban pleasures, but still gives a good impression of its wealth and cultural importance in late mediaeval times, when it was one of the great cities of the world.

THE UNIVERSITY
The University of Erlangen-Nürnberg, officially called Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, was founded in 1743 and is a medium-sized German university with more than 28.000 students and a staff of 12.000. There are about 1.350 full-time teachning-positions in 11 faculties. The University Library (including department libraries) has a collection of more than 4.5 million volumes and is open to all students. The Main Library and the faculties/departments have reading-rooms.

Most of the faculties are situated in Erlangen. Only the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences (Wirtschafts- und Sozialwissenschaften) and the Faculty of Education (Erziehungswissenschaften) are in Nürnberg.

The University of Erlangen-Nürnberg offers a great variety of fields/subjects. Apart from German Studies, which will probably be the most attractive field for a foreign student, there are many interesting historical and philological subjects taught in the Faculty of Arts, from Prehistory and Comparative Indo-European Studies to Latin-American Studies and Contemporary Studies of the Near East. In the other faculties Lutheran Theology, Computer Science and a wide range of technical subjects are Erlangen specialties.

THE GERMAN EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM
At the Faculty of Arts (Philosophische Fakultäten), students normally follow lectures and courses in three different subjects/departments, one main subject (Hauptfach) and two complementary subjects (Nebenfächer). In many courses there are minor examinations at the end of the semester. After about four semesters (two years), students take preliminary exams (Zwischenprüfung) in two of their three subjects. Final exams leading to an M.A. degree are taken after a minimum of eight semesters (four years).
