University of Bergen: Faculty of Arts: Ph.D. Research School

Presenting a Paper

The length of each paper should not exceed 30 minutes: 20 min. for the talk and ten min. for questions and discussions. A good research paper optimally includes a discussion of the following issues:

What is the research problem?
How is it currently being dealt with in the literature?
What is your solution to the problem? Are you challenging or supporting earlier views?

How does your contribution add to what has already been said in the field?

Handouts
Please make sure to bring enough handouts for everybody (appr. 40) as the organizing committee cannot assist with copying.

Those giving powerpoint presentations are encouraged to also bring along handouts with their slides on, both as documentation for the other participants, but also in case of technical emergencies.

The handout should outline the structure of the talk and include all linguistic examples, with glosses and translation if the examples are not in English. This is particularly important as the conference participants come from several non-Scandinavian countries. Make sure, however, not to confuse a handout with a written version of your talk.

Sample handout [pdf] for illustration.

A typical handout for a twenty min. talk can be everything from two to eight pages (including examples, tables, figures and perhaps references), depending on the nature of the talk.

We look forward to seeing your in Bergen in June!
