Professor in Russian at the Department of Foreign Languages, University of Bergen

The Department of Foreign Languages is seeking to appoint a Professor in Russian. The successful applicant will be based at the Department of Foreign Languages at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Bergen.

Russian is one of the subjects taught at the recently merged Department of Foreign Languages. The department currently has 52 permanent academic staff, 12 administrative staff, approx. 30 doctoral fellows and a number of other temporary staff. The department conducts research and offers teaching in Arabic, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Spanish. The department also offers beginners’ courses in Chinese.

Russian studies currently has five permanent academic staff. In addtion to the advertised post, there are one professor in literature and three associate professors whose research is in linguistics. At present there are also three doctoral fellows. Russian is taught at all levels up to Ph.D.

The successful candidate must document high academic qualifications in the study of Russian language and/or literature. Applicants with expertise in intersections between the two will be given preference.

In the evaluation of candidates, weight will be given to international scholarly publications and research progression, as documented by publications during the last 5–10 years, and concrete plans for future research.

As Russian is a small subject at the University of Bergen, all staff, regardless of academic specialisation, are required to share overall responsibility for the subject and to contribute to maintaining and developing courses in Russian studies. Participation in administrative tasks is also expected.

The teaching language will normally be Norwegian and Russian.  The successful applicant must be able to teach in Norwegian or one of the other Scandinavian languages within two years of his/her appointment.

Basic teaching competence is also a requirement, but the successful applicant who does not have such competence at the time of his/her appointment will be offered training and will be required to produce evidence of such competence within one year of the date of appointment.  This deadline is extended to two years for the successful applicant who does not master a Scandinavian language at the time of appointment.

The General Regulations of the University of Bergen state that as part of the normal duties of the position, the successful applicant may also be required to undertake teaching, supervision and work in connection with examinations in his or her particular field outside the organisational unit to which the appointment belongs.
