it's all over and except for stian who did all the work on these web pages everyone is sad : pnils and bt have already been home for awhile and according to recent reports there's really not much to long for : except family and friends : which is important : yes : it's time to say our goodbye's : hide our tears and turn our experiences into nice memories : here goes in no particular order:

day 23: to sum it up, we're content

pnils and bt will be leaving on monday so no use in doing more work to get gigs : we're happy people anyway : 3 weeks have passed like a breeze : we've done 5 gigs, some of them good ones, all of them worth it : toke's been submitted to 2 radio interviews which to him is the equivalent of the electric chair and not shaving off his puberty moustache : we've had som airplay over here and we've been on national radio twice in norway : 200-300 promo-cd's have been handed out, the majority to women we find highly attratctive : 17.632 beers have left residue in our stomachs, some cigarettes have smoked : we've experienced the wonderful world ofgood shopping to get in touch with our feminine sides : the nice weather has given us an attractive tan and the allround feeling of happiness : we know these reports keep getting shorter : but when you find yourself there's not that much to say : really :

day 22: we are fond of girls

we're greeeted by the lovely waitress ath the lounge telling us how nice it is to see us again : it's mutual : actually we're very happy about every female we see again : anywhere : we're all smiles through our own sound check and kick off the concert : more people than last time and this time quite a few of them know what we're about : good mood, good concert : we 7-8 songs and call it a day : well, a night then : great feedback : two of our new female fans are observed wearing home made goldenboy t-shirts : yes, we think that is utterly cool : told you we're simple people : we're impressed by the next act on stage : hardcoreband built kick quite a few asses : we shake our rumps and head for tony's with new-won friends : yes, it was a good night :

day 21: we've got the rythm...lounge

we really need a new gig : so we get one: cool jebarry, booking manager at dr street and the rythm lounge hands us a new chance at the latter tomorrow : friday : we collect equipment from just about everywhere and prepare for pure pop-punk pleasure : we're getting about lazy when it comes to the promo work but pull ourselves together and make some flyers for the concert : hand most of them out at a club in la jolla : a nice evening by the way : how interesting is this : we don't know : but you keep coming back don't you :

day 20: home is where the smart is

back to ocean beach in san diego staying with our sweet friend carlye : call the casbah, dream street, the rythm lounge, gypsy lounge and the epicentre to get rid of our craving to play for a public : no luck : still happy to be home : beer good food and friends : we're home with our homies in laid-back ob : isn't it sickening how cool we sound after 20 days in california : you're damn right : is this a sign that after all we really miss bergen and that we're just using this act to try to distance ourselves from our longing : do we want to go home : if you open and drink enough bottles of beer thoughts like these will drift away : amen :

day 19: punk cowboys liked, but not enough

we get out of la with heads big as air balloons : yesterday's drinks were expensive, but we don't understand why we have to pay the price the day after : no logic whatsoever : time for santa barabara where we hang out for a brief time but wxperience more than we did in la for way too many days : we find hayley street and immediately check out the ataris' record shop : note to self : spend less money at the viper room in the future : spend more in this shop : much more : nice woman behind the counter accepts ten of our cd's as a gift of worship and she promises to pass them out, also to the boys in the ataris : get a hold of steve lubarsky at lobster records and pay him a visit : nice and experienced man in the world of punk : we listen for a long time and try to digest the advice he gives us : he listens to our cd and tells us he likes it : we're like small puppies hungry for a pat on the back : we drool : lobster records is to small to go for a band from norway : we knew that : no disappointment : we setttle for the generous gifts : cd's, t-shirts and stickers : we're simple people : we're the amish of punk : we head back to la and the mxpx gig : a winner : we do some promo work and the vocalist of mest (maverick records) is observed signing a goldenboy cd : what does that mean : we don't know : we finish off the night as cowboys on the saddle ranch : we seem to be losing our identity :

day 18: major record deal? naah, probably not

we check out the key club : cool place, indeed : hand over some cd's but won't get the gig we wanted : knock on the coconut teaser's door and invade the viper room but no response : then we spot the offices of maverick records and decide to do a stunt : we boldly enter the record company and a satisfied when they accept our demo-cd : normally they don't but finally it pays off to come all the way from norway : tomorrow we'll head for the ataris' record shop in santa barbara : we'll also try to hook up with steve lubarsky form lobster records if he has time for us : tomorrow evening will be spent in happy company with other pop-punkers at the mxpx and no motive concert : then the night blasts off : freaky heavy metal show at the viper room : expensive drinks, but we're norwegian and used to worse : we accept : we pay : we enjoy : key moment experienced when the bass player of anthrax accepts our cd : anthrax, man : heavy metal's equivalent to britney spears : the night never seems to finish : mtv-stevo from jack ass is a nice man but it's still weirdo to meet him and chat : he gets a cd on the goldenboy house : to top it off, we meet the stunt man from planet of the apes : it just doesn't get any cooler : these people rule : and we get to rule a little bit with them : high society : high fidelity and very high goldenboy :

day 17: tiny boys in a big and mean city

a short ride in our beloved rental and we conclude that we're in way over our heads in this place : we haven't planned anything and all places seem to be booked for months : only one thing to do, head for the beach : early night at the Orbit Hostel : we make up our minds : we'll use monday to check out a few things here in la : tuesday is to be spent in santa barbara before we head back to our second home in san diego and the mxpx-concert : heavy promotion ahead of us : call tim pyles and jebarry to set up new gigs but no answers : go to bed a bit disillusioned : but not beaten : oh no : not at all :

day 16: in over our heads

appropriate and very fitting start to the day : the room looks terrible : beer, fags and guests floating all over : rock and roll, thank you very much : jebarry from the rythm lounge calls us to extend his thaanks for the fantastic concert : we get up : clean the room and leave for los angeles : major bummer : we quickly realise that la is in fact quite a large city : we're tired after three days of partying and have a few free beers at the motel before we call i a relatively early night :

day 15: we seriously rule and life is treating us well

our gig at the rythm lounge is confirmed, but another problem looms : they other bands won't let us borrow their equipment : fuckers : miraculously things end well : drum set from rudy (nice man from surf shop) guitar and amp from jason (friend of our girlfriends) and we rent a guitar amp and a hi-hat from a music store : stressed and pressed we arrive at rl thinking everything is oki-doki-mr smokey : not so : not so at all : no sound man, one microphone : etc : we decide not to give a shit and thus turns this to the meanest gig so far on our tour :starts off with an ego-blast from toke performing 'always rebecca' alone : people are nice and now some of them even know our songs : pretty darned cool : we even do a couple of songs we haven't used since bergen like '56' and 'confirmation' : the sounds isn't all that bad and we're cool enough to stop playing when people ask us to play more : the night ends with compulsory beers at tony's and sunshine : and then it's time for nachspiel.... :

day 14: disappointment day

wake up after another rather humid night out on the town and the moist and sticky feeling haunt us the whole day : disappointment lurks : our gig at the playhouse on 22 sept is cancelled : the boss didn't feel we'd fit in with the other bands : we seriously don't understand : goldenboy is like ketchup : it goes with anything as long as you're hungry : and we are : we've never pretended to be gourmet-rockers : we won't give up though and will contact them again for a new possibility : in addition we still haven't heard from jebarry who booked us for the rythm lounge on friday : that's tomorrow : scary and disappointing facts :

day 13: meaninglessness

our sober gig at chain reaction takes its toll : terror attacks from crazy men make our day a meaningless hangover : why : we didn't even drink on tuesday : the us and the rest of the world are in shock and we share the fear and pain : bt changes his flight and decides to go back on the 24th of sept thus joining nils on the way home : gaute and toke will stay on until oct 1st : last week will probably be spent in mexico : hola and stuff : not a good day promotion-wise, but a nice day out with the family : ski jumping on the beach, strong beer and an early buzz : pick-up line "do you wanna make out?" used by one of the goldenboy idiots : as stupid as stupid can be, but comment reported to have given good and desired result : rock stars without fans are the worst :

day 12: no words for motherfuckers, motherfuckers!

holy shit : we wake up in hell : 4 planes have been hijacked : the world trade centre is no more : pentagon is burning : this is world war 3 : this is too much for four children from norway : we're scared : we're confused : and we're pissed at fucking fundamentalist : want to commit suicide? fine, you go bin laden-moroons : this is sick : these people are sick : nausea : we postpone our trip to los angeles and decide to stay in ob until saturday : we play chain reaction this evening : naturally, this gig is really unimportant now and we really suck : it doesn't matter : goldenboy isn't important today : tragedy is an understatement : you terrorists go hide under your fundamentalist hand-knit carpets : piss your pants 'cause the carpets will be lifted : and it'll be your family who tell people where to look :

day 11: we're on the air and we're....eeeh, on a buzz

no big plans for the day (whooooahh, major surprise, so far this trip has been sooo organised!), but we use our phone till it's glowing in the dark : we find out that the gig on friday will be at the rythm lounge, not dream street as first planned : we keep in touch with our man tim pyles and go to experience him and his band the banana seeds at the casbah : the gig is a local showcase, several bands and live on air at 91x afterwards : goldenboy's boys try to be as cool as the local coolies and we impress them all when we tell them where we're from : that's norway, not hell : well, actually gaute is close to the latter : trondheim is considered the purgatorium of norway : or some sort of limbo : but he's smiling anyway : suddenly toke finds himself on the air again : live : according to himself things are much easier this time (editor's note: he has this tendency to be positive about life when he's had more than 3 gin tonics) : torkel promotes goldenboy's webpages (editor's note: he must have been really drunk, i've checked the statistics and realise he's been mumbling the url) : toke also encourages people to listen to the music at mp3.com : cool as beans in tomato sauce : ends up with mr pyles and another important man in 91x promising to play a song from our record on the radio on monday : what day is it today by the way : right : depends on how you look at it : and where :

day 10: wasted day then surprise

sleep in and waste parts of the day : head for downtown san diego where are huge music festival is taking place : no tickets but we get to hear the offspring really well just by standing outside : dinner at mcdonalds (what a change!) : call tim pyles and visit him in his studio at 91x : nice chat, our cd, stickers and promo-material is handed over and he promises to help as out : nice lady enters the studio : responsible for the reggae show coming up : astounded by the fact that we come all the way from norway she puts toke live on air : he immediately turns into shaking' stevens and stutters a fragments of sentences, seemingly without any meaning at all : ends the thing buy stuttering goldenboy rocks the world in norwegian : experience nerve wrecking thus no beers this evening : junk food and coca cola :

day 9: burritos and beer diet a bit repetitive

make an appointment with tim pyles, nice bloke and radio-dude in san diego : seek out tower records by sports arena where nice people can now buy our cd's as a bundle : placed in the locals shelf which is pretty hefty : we are observed by two female employees who are wondering what we're doing tonight : we retreat : more phone calls but no more gigs confirmed : but this is the land of opportunities : things have happened and will happen : more late night promotion : note to self: burrito and beer diet doesn't seem to have the desired effect : actually, it gets a bit boring after 9 days : remember this : do not forget :

day 8: bodyboarding, self-promotion and slight hangovers

oh : yes, we soon confirm that we must have had quite a few drinks yesterday : perfect weather and a day at the beach it is : nils buys a body board, we play hacky-sack and surf the waves : nice : gigs at dream street and playhouse resolved : we'll play the 14th at ds and the 22 at ph : mighty cool : in the evening we hit the epicentre, a nice all-ages-club where almost every cool band has played once upon a time : seems to be fully booked but we hand out CD's and phone numbers and hope for the best : 4 female goldenboy fans show up at the motel : fun : CD's handed out and they seem happy : almost as happy as we are : late night spent promoting ourselves at our regular hangouts tony's and sunshine : meet nice young americans of both sexes and end up at a nachspiel : fun again : our CD is played at full volume and people like it : or they're just very drunk : or both :

day 7: we try to rock and almost succeed

day kicks off with a few phone calls and heavy e-mailing : out of the blue comes the news that we might actually be double booked on 14 sept : openings both at dream street and playhouse : scary : we call whit's answering machine but hear nothing from him : drive in and out up and down and finally end up in lake forest where we're playing our second gig at the gypsy lounge : hang out most of the day : eat italian, drink beer and play pool : concert is a multi-band-very-democratic-happening : kicks off with bliss, a cure/kent/coldplay inspired rock group with obvious talent : then it's time for wendy woo, a singing woman and her guitar : and then in the end the red, a band bursting with melancholy, confidence and a tendency too use way too much of the evening : frightened we watch the audience leaving the club before we get a chance to show them a different style of music : even screaming, sweet female goldenboy sympathisers leave as they have to work really early the next morning : finally we get to rock and perform better than at the casbah : the crowd is countable and rather silent but quite a few give us quite the feedback after the gig : Sound man mike, in charge of booking, is observed with a goldenboy sticker on his tee and he wants us to return to the gypsy lounge a more appropriate evening : the night ends with some stiff drinks, whiskey good riddance and heavy snoring in the car :

day 6: confirming the confirmed and a new chance

the middle of the week is the middle of the week : time to annoy our contacts at the epicentre, dream street and winston's : in addition we have to make sure everything is a-okay concerning our gigs at the gypsy lounge and chain reaction : we'll probably call our prime-fan leyla, radio man tim pyles, whit in ugly kid joe and other important people : we stumble into a nice girl playing in a metal band : she informs us that her band can't play the gig at the playhouse on sept 14th and she's wants us to do it instead : new opening greeted with joy and free camel cigarettes : this is truly the land of opportunities : we are truly the weirdest people in the country :

day 5: we play like nirvana played

we use our new cell phone (619 806 1550) to contact a bunch of different places, people and contacts : 'never ending happy ending' is now for sale at tower records by the sports arena in San Diego : we head for the casbah where lady luck is smiling [keep in mind mr. sinatra is dead : god bless him] : a band is unable to play and we are offered the chance to shake our rumps : our debut is imminent : it turns out we're the first one out of three bands : luckily the other are cool people and lend us their equipment : a small turn-out, only about 20 show up : in our nervousness we are only moderately satisfied with our performance : good feedback from the few who are watching : most of them buy our cd which is a good sign : worn out and full of impressions we enjoy a couple of beers at the casbah and listen to the two other bands : a very angry hardcore band and a very good power-pop band, both locals : we go back to ocean beach and go to bed confident that we're on the ground floor in an elevator going up : up : up : we played san diego : not much of a crowd : but we played :

day 4: labour day no time to rest

we check out quite a few joints : che cafe, the epicentre and dream street are places we are trying hard to play : opportunity might be knocking : in the evening the nice lady at dream street takes a bunch a pix with her digital camera : for a brief moment we smelled like rock stars : very, very brief : but the moment was definitely there :

day 3: girls with hangovers

there are two nice girls with heavy hangovers in our hotel room : note to self: find out how they ended up here : we pack our bags and look forward to the fenix concert at night : tunrs out to be a real happening, they kick ass and we get to do some promotion : cd handed out to sound-men, members of the band and a fair share of punk-kids, in particular sweet members of the opposite sex : problems with the weird and strict id-policy of this immense country : since when is a passport not a good way to show how old you are : since now it seems :

day 2: wake up and smell the coffee

four farting frustrated men with serious hangovers wake up in a surprisingly nice hotel room in san diego : check out time and then we hit ocean beach : enter 'vincents', our cd is played and people greet us with open arms, however, without offering us a gig : we find some cool surf joints and a used-records store where our cd once again threatens to blow the speakers : free cds for the kids who enjoy our music : evening ends like hemingway : nice : now staying in single rooms in the guliest motel in the us : note to self: labour day not a good day to find accommodation :

day 1: arrival

arrived at san diego airport 22:00 local time : short delay and a hell of a long flight : tired as only men can be we found our rental and headed for the bristol hotel : one beer and a whiskey later we found ourselves in san diego downtown : frightening and fascinating for rednecks like us : a few pints in a mexican bar and then back to the hotel : worn out : sleep tight :
