goldenboy:
never ending happy ending
(goldenmusic)

goldenboy, the band from bergen, has become a better band since their last ep : they have also invested their money in better sound : but what impresses you most about 'never ending happy ending' is the good melodies : you won't find catchier punk-pop than '(not) going home alone' or 'in a year or two'. the slightly more complicated 'pink' also shows that goldenboy has grown as a band : and they have an energy that's contagious when they rock their guitars and sing about cynical womanizers and girls on mtv : well, this is also the band who left haphazardly for the us : with a couple of gigs as the result : if they are to compete with their american counterparts, they need to brush up their lyrics a little and become better musicians : but the material on their two ep's is so strong in itself that goldenboy should reach more people :

national newspaper, man!

yep, a brief moment in the cyberspace limelight for goldenboy on 17 aug : on the cover page of national newspaper dagbladet's web edition it took very little time before people noticed and e-mails started pouring in : the good news was that the people in oslo took their time to check out our web pages and actually wrote an article about goldenboy based on a press release and whatever they could find on our cyberspace haven : the internet is truly powerful : you can read the article by clicking here : haven't had time to translate it yet so take it as a free norwegian language lesson if you don't speak the language : it will magically pop up as a new window in your browser : thank god for macintosh : thank god for a lot of things actuallly :

heading for the usa
— but first goldenboy will rock kvarteret

The audience should really look forward to tonight according to the boys in goldenboy. This evening they play their last concert before heading for the US to try their luck.

-Contrary to many other bands we have great ambitions to actually perform for our audience, says Nils Hægstad Flåm, member of the all-set-and-ready-to-go-band. -We give everything we got on stage, and that's quite a lot, he claims with certainty.

In a haphazard way
Tonight they release their new EP and 31 aug goldenboy head for the land of dreams - in a haphazard way. With their study grants and hard-earned money from the summer in their pockets California awaits them. -That's where we belong musically, explains Torkel Hofslett Thowsen. -The bands we listen to come from over there. "This is our Graceland" he adds with a giggle. -But the US is huge. Wouldn't it be better to start off here in Norway? -This is our dream. We want to go all the way and risk it. We hope to get some air play while we're away, says Torkel. -Maybe we return home as popstars without knowing it, the boys exclaim with laughter. Goldenboy will stay in California for a month, but so far they only have two confirmed concerts.

Hard work
-We've got things cooking and have quite a few people who have offered to give us a hand and push us forward. Ten gigs is our goal, but we'll play anywhere if we're offered a chance. -But what if you fail? Will you go bankrupt? -We already have, smiles Gaute Halvorsen. -But what could go wrong? We'll have a great vacation no matter what, claims Torkel. The boys are quite aware that it takes years of touring and hard work to succeed in the US, but this doesn't stop them. -We really don't know if it's our ambition to make it over there. We won't be disappointed if Sony doesn't pull us out of the car to make us sign, says Nils

review of never ending happy ending, bt

coming out of the basement

It's not especially cool. The lead singer is moderately good and the musicians are really quite average. Producer Bjørn Ivar Tysse has removed much of the clutter that dominated the last release but it still oozes basement of goldenboy. And so what?

Goldenboy performs powerpop with the "everybody can do it"-attitude of punk and that is exactly what gives this local group of 20-somethings their charm. While they are gradually cramming their ensemble and moving personal thresholds, they are playing all the strings they master. And they are doing it with an enthusiasm and a spirit that blows you away. Listening to it once, twice or three times they references to genre-chiefs like Offspring, Millencolin and NOFX might seem devastatingly apparent on this four-track EP. But you shouldn't be mislead by the first impressions. This band is first and foremost about good melodies. Listen to the guitar running parallel to the chorus in "(Not) going home alone". Or devour "Pink" in its entirety with its stop/start dynamics and its irresistible refrain. It could almost have been Lemonheads. That's how good the song is. These guys have got something going for them.

goldenboy on speed

student newspaper "hibiscus" covered goldenboy's release party : in the nov issue fans found a two-page interview with torkel : they also found space for a review of the promo-cd thus making the issue golden in every way : the interview revealed classic comments about torkel's hobbies being porno and playstation and also showed that the band in no way would like to be associated with "trang fødsel", a group that at one time were world famous in norway : "if we're anything like them, then we're trang fødsel on speed" was the laconic comment from lead singer torkel : all the golden trivia was surrounded by incredibly horrible photos :

promising debut

goldenboy takes us by surprise with their clever melodies on the debut ep "entertaining your girl" : most of the six songs on the cd are hummable and well structured : they're short and concise and have catchy refrains : "family values", the first song on the record, could have used a slight tightening at least in relation to the punk pop genre : the quality of the sound is not the best, but goldenboy shouldn't be blamed for that : it's probably caused by a small budget : even if many of the songs are catchy one of them stands above the others : "kitchen sink reality" is my obvious favourite : a good production could easily take it to the b-list of p3 (norwegian radio station) which should be one of the first goals for this band :

before and after

local newspapers bergensavisen and bergens tidende both found space for goldenboy : the first had an interview with torkel and the latter gave a very favourable review of the release party concert :

ready for the stage

[29 may 2000] Torkel Thowsen, vocalist and guitarist in goldenboy, playing at Garage tomorrow.
-Why the name Goldenboy?
- We found it sufficiently provoking. Everyone has an opionion about it; they either think it's cool or they think it sucks. The first time I heard the word was in a a Seinfeld-episode where he refers to his shirt as "golden boy".
- Are you a boyband?
- Absolutely, ha-ha. No, not in the real sense of the concept.
-In your press release you write that the audience will experience a band from Bergen that are "very different from the 'tired-of-life' depressive bands that have dominated the city scene for too long." Explain!
- I find that an incredible number of bands in Bergen are devoting themselves to melancholy. We listen to a lot of punk from USA and Sweden. And it's good music - happy music. I don't understand why people need to be introvert and depressed all the time. We are a musical reaction to the whole system. I believe there is a need for us here in Begen, too.
- How would you describe your music?
- Raw pop med a touch of punk.
- What are your plans for the future?
- We have a small problem at the moment as our guitarist has moved to Trondheim. He's coming down for the concert at Garage and we're hoping for a in Trondheim. We are going to record a demo and hope to release an EP, maybe in vinyl. At the moment we're not sure if we should look for another guitarist - or if we should become so big that the one we have now returns to Bergen!

critics prefer goldenboy

[30 may 2000] Sigh and goldenboy attracted an impressive attendance at "Nystemten" at Den Stundesløse last Tuesday. Even on the slowest day of the week in the middle of the music festival it was as crowded as on a Saturday night. Probably due to intensive marketing to friends and familiars. Solid performances by both bands even though I have to admit that goldenboy was more to my taste. It's nice to once again experience a band that plays positive rock in the middle of all the melancholy that rules the stages around the city.

a golden opportunity: very local newspaper 'bygdanytt' very enthusiastic

- no translation at the moment -

Musikklinjen satte opp musikalen "Les Miserables" i fjor.

summer concert at garagelight in the dark

Saturday at 23:00 it's time to take of your leather jackets and heavy boots in the basement in Nygårdsgaten. It's time for light-punkers Goldenboy (picture) to enter the stage with the ambition to raise the ceiling from the existing level of a metre and a half in the bunker below street level, aka Garage. -Dennis can forget about the lights tonight, proclaims Torkel Thowsen. Tonight you'll hear optimistic, melodic and sweaty Blink-inspired light-punk anchored in early glam rock, if we are to believe the students.
