About CL and Bergen
|
|
The Section of Linguistic Studies at the University of Bergen has for many years taught CL at the undergraduate level, and since 1996 also at graduate (masters) level. Student numbers have been low, classes having typically under 10 students, but the numbers are increasing, thanks to a recent boom in commercial and political interest in language technology. Of the total academic staff of 14, three are presently doing most of the teaching in CL: Prof. Helge Dyvik, Lars Johnsen and Prof. Koenraad de Smedt. Apart from the staff's own computers, the section has a lab of 5 Sun workstations that are used for teaching and research, while students also have access to Macintosh and PC labs. There is an active research environment in CL and Language Technology, both at the Section and at the Humanities Information Technologies Center. With the recent establishment of NST, a major Nordic language technology industry, and SAIL, an incubator for Language Technology companies at nearby Voss, there will be excellent opportunities for cooperative research and education projects. Starting in January 2000, the Section has started offering Language Technology courses in cooperation with the Bergen Technical College. Demand for these courses presently exceeds the offer. Bergen is located in Western Norway and has a population of 220000, of which 17000 are students. The beautiful historic city is situated right by the ocean and is surrounded by mountains offering magnificent nature experiences, including skiing, hiking and fishing which are very popular. The climate in the city is relatively mild and wet. Bergen is a highly cultural city with continuous offerings, including a yearly festival with performances of great international standing. In 2000, Bergen is one of the cultural capitals of Europe. |
