Alexandra N. Leontieva has recently defended her doctoral dissertation,  "Stories from the Beer Kiosk: Contemporary Russian Folk Narratives in Michael Weller's Nevsky Prospect Legents". The project explores the influence of the unofficial folk culture, opposed to the official Soviet mythology, on contemporary prose fiction, focusing on the works of Sergei Dovlatov and Mikhail Veller (Weller). The examined texts include Weller's "Legendy Nevskogo Prospekta" (Nevsky Prospect Legends), Dovlatov's "Zona" ("The Zone"), and recent contemporary folklore collections.

Research interests include: Contemporary Russian literature; urban folklore (jokes, anecdotes, urban legends), Bakhtinian theory, post-Soviet and post-Socialist studies, and Russian cooking.
