Nordisk Midtaustenbulletin
31, januar-februar 1997

Tema:

Stay tuned for detaljar.

Individual and Society Project: Update

We have earlier presented this European research project. The Nordic countries are prominently represented in the steering committee (since each country has one member), so we may perhaps inform about the acitivites there in this forum.

The project is oriented around seven thematic groups, such as "images and representation"; "modes of production", "religious life" etc. that are supposed to focus on the role of the individual in Muslim social life in the Mediterranean region. The mode of work is through a series of European workshops and local seminars on sub-topics within these themes. Hopefully they will lead to a series of publications eventually.

In addition, the project is supposed to involve "junior" researchers both into the meetings directly, and through a series of travel scholarships (of a modest size, it must be said). The first round of these were offered (in a somewhat disorganized fashion) last year, and have now been awarded. The next round will be announced in 1998.

The first seminars and workshops are already under way. A few have been located to the Nordic countries, all still in the planning stage. A seminar within the them of "Power relationships", focusing on the contemporary period is intended to take place in Tampere, a workshop on "Art and calligraphy" in Uppsala or Stockholm, and a seminar on "Political Language, Action and Religion" that is already running in Madrid will continue cooperatively in Lund and Bergen. The workshops will probably be at least semi-closed (i.e. if you are working on a relevant topic, the organizers may welcome your contribution, but it is up to them), while the seminars are open to all. We will thus continue to inform you about the activities in our countries.

We have also added further detail about the seven themes on the Eurames web server at http://www.hf.uib.no/smi/eurames/ismm.html. It may be of general interest, as it discusses various general topics and shows ways of thinking among our European colleagues. Check it out.

Orientalia Suecana

Volume 43-44 (1994-5) of Uppsala's Orientalia Suecana, the journal of philological studies, is now out. With 220 pages, it contains numerous articles from members of our Society as well as international contributors - we note among the former Mats Eskhult (Old Testament texts), Jaako Hämeen-Anttila (Maqamas), Bo Isaksson (Arabic dialectology), Carina Jahani (Gul Khan Nasir's poetry) and others. The area covered stretches as indicated from Hebrew over Arabic and Persian to Turkish languages, partly linguistic and partly literary studies. The late Nils Simonsson and Geo Widegren are also remembered. Articles are in English, with some contributions in German and French.

The journal's address is the Department of Asian-African Languages, Uppsala University, Box 513, S-751 20, Uppsala.

Finnish telephone changes

This is old news in Finland, but I only discovered it lately, and others may not have noticed yet: Finland has revised their area code system, and did so already 12 October last year. The system was changed completeley, with new areas and divisions. However, the most important changes for us are:

Helsinki has changed its area code from 0 to 9. Previously, the Dept of Afro-Asian languages was at +358-0-191-22092. Now it is +358-9-191-22092. [The '2' was doubled some time ago.]

Tampere changes from 31 to 3; Joensuu from 73 to 13; and Åbo/Turku from 23 to 2. These are the university towns with Middle Eastern interests; if you want to phone elsewhere, check with the local telephone company for the new area codes. If you go to Finland, note that they at the same time changed their prefix for calls going abroad to the European standard '00'.

Historian in Asmara?

We have received a request from the History Dept at the University of Asmara. Apparently, they are short of teachers, and wonder if any postgrad student from our countries would be interested in a job there, from September of this year. That is all we know, do not ask us for further detail, but if it grabs you, contact:

Anmeldelse: Al-Kitab fi ta'allum al-'arabiyya

Kristin Brustad, Mahmoud Al-Batal & Abbas Al-Tonsi: Al-Kitab fi ta'allum al-'arabiyya Textbook for Beginning Arabic (Washington, Georgetown University Press, 1995).

Adjunkt, Helle Lykke Nielsen, ph.d.,
Center for Mellemøststudier
Odense Universitet.
