The Society organizes a Nordic and international conferences every three years. The conferences are open to all scholars in Middle Eastern studies in the humanities and social sciences.
2010, Bergen: Middle Eastern Connectivities
The eighth conference of the Nordic Society was held in Bergen 24-26 September 2010. The theme was the relationship between the peoples and groups within the Middle East and the outside world. The conference emphasized translocal relations and its effects on social, cultural, educational, religious and other transformations. Furthermore, the conference highlighted issues of trans-regional relations and exchanges to and from the Middle East and Africa, Asia and Europe both historically and in the present.
We have previously organized the following Nordic conferences:
The society published volumes of selected papers from the four first conferences. These books are still in print and available through the series "Nordic Research on the Middle East".
In addition, all submitted papers or abstracts from the later conferences 1995-2004 are available in their original format, as an on-line Proceedings archive from these conferences.
In the period between the conferences, the Society also organizes smaller workshops or dissertation seminars, primarily on a Nordic scale. The last Ph.D. workshop was held in June 2008, in Cairo and Alexandria.
