Yngvar B. Steinholt was born April 26th 1969 in Bodø. Grew up in Mosjøen 1971-84, then moved north to Tromsø. Studied Russian, German and Literary Studies at Tromsø University 1989-96. Cand. Philol. degree in Russian Language and Literature from May 1996 with the dissertation "Saftutpresseren" on rock lyrics by Konstantin Kinchev.
Worked as consultant and interpreter for border police and customs 1996-1999. Freelancer based in Aarhus, Denmark 1999-2000. Embarked on doctoral project at the dept. of Russian Studies, Bergen University in February 2001. Conducted fieldwork for the doctoral project in St. Petersburg in autumn 2001, spring 2002 and winter 2004.
In summer/autumn 2005 he was involved in preparations for Austrian filmmaker Elisabeth Guggenberger's planned cinema documentary on Russian rock.
Steinholt defended his doctoral thesis and received the Doctor Artium degree in November 2004. Since then senior lecturer in Russian literature and cultural history at Bergen University.
Spare-time activities include:
- Non-performative musical activities.
- Co-initiator of Filmklubben Bergen Øst (Bergen East Filmclub).
- Rock climbing novice.
- Driver of self-restored Ford Cortina MK I.
