3-year PhD Studentship in Arabic, Islamic or Middle East studies (the Honeyman Studentship)

The Department of Arabic & Middle East Studies, University of St. Andrews, is inviting applications for one PhD Studentship (The Honeyman Studentship) beginning in September 2002. The Studentship will provide funding of up to Sterling £ 5,000 per year in year one, for 3 years. The amount awarded will rise each year in line with rises in tuition fees and standard maintenance grants. Other awards to the successful Student will be taken into account in assessing the need for the full =£ 5,000.

The Department of Middle Eastern Studies at New York University invites applications for a new position in the field of Islamic studies, to begin September 1, 2002, pending budgetary and administrative approval. The position is open rank. Applicants' research should focus on the period from the emergence of Islam through the 13th century CE, with a thorough grounding in (and ability to teach) foundational texts, including Quran and hadith, and an engagement with current trends and debates in the field. Areas of specialization might include Islamic law, theology, philosophy and/or adab. We are seeking candidates who share our interest in historically and textually-grounded, comparative, and interdisciplinary approaches; can teach at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, including supervision of doctoral dissertations; and complement the research and teaching interests of current faculty members. THE SENATOR JERAHMIEL S. AND CAROLE S. GRAFSTEIN CHAIR IN MEDIEVAL JEWISH STUDIES

The Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations invites applications and nominations for the endowed Grafstein Chair in Medieval Jewish Studies. The holder of the Chair will be an already established scholar at the associate or full professor level. Research areas of special interest include medieval Jewish theology and philosophy; Kabbalah and early Jewish mysticism; and/or classical Jewish Biblical exegesis. The appointment date is July 1, 2002, and the successful candidate will teach courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels. These courses will be fully integrated into the Department's curriculum as well as the undergraduate program in Jewish Studies and the graduate program of the Centre for Medieval Studies.

University of Asmara

Political Science (Africa, Middle East)

The Department of Political Science at the University of Asmara has two positions available for Ph.D. holders in Political Science and/or International Relations: 1) The first position requires a specialization in political theory and political thought. Teaching will include courses in Political Theory, Theories of Democracy, Marxism, and Liberalism and Conservatism. The second position requires a specialization in African Politics and Middle Eastern Politics. Teaching will included courses on the Political Dynamics of the Horn of Africa, African Politics, and Political Systems of the Middle East.

PROGRAM IN HISTORY OF SCIENCE, ROCKEFELLER FOUNDATION FELLOWSHIPS IN THE HUMANITIES, 2002-2003, UNIVERSITY OF OKLAHOMA

Two fellowships will be awarded for 2002-2003 to scholars with doctorates or equivalent background in appropriate fields whose research deals with scientific interrelations between Europe and Islam during the period 1300-1800 and/or with comparisons between their respective scientific traditions. The 9-month fellowship carries a stipend up to $32,000, with benefits including a budget for travel and research expenses.

Islamic Studies, Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship

Northwestern University, Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences seeks applications for a Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship in Islamic Studies for a period of two years, beginning September 1, 2002. All requirements for the Ph.D. must be completed before the start date. We are seeking recent Ph.D.'s with ambitious research interests and strong teaching abilities working on issues of central importance to Islamic Studies. The successful candidate will be housed in the appropriate disciplinary department and will teach a one-quarter lecture course and a one-quarter seminar per year, and present one colloquium per year.

DISCIPLINARY FIELD OPEN

Oberlin College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in the College of Arts and Sciences in the Middle East/North Africa (MENA) region, from the mid-19th century to the present. The initial appointment to this position will be for a term of four years, beginning Fall Semester 2002, and will carry the rank of Assistant Professor or higher.

The incumbent must be able to provide a broad coverage of the historical, cultural, political and social trends in the MENA region. Excellent language proficiency in a regional language; training in the region s broader history; extensive experience conducting research in the region; and command of current methods and interdisciplinary approaches in the relevant fields of MENA, are expected. The incumbent will be located in an appropriate disciplinary department or program and will teach five courses annually, including introductory, intermediate, and advanced undergraduate courses. He or she will also be expected to participate in the full range of faculty responsibilities, including academic advising, service on committees, and sustained scholarly research and/or other creative work appropriate to the position. Among the qualifications desired for the appointment is the Ph.D. degree (in hand or expected by Fall Semester 2002). Candidates must demonstrate interest and potential excellence in undergraduate teaching. Successful teaching experience at the college level is desirable.

The Institute of Ismaili Studies was established in 1977 with the object of promoting scholarship and learning on Islam, in the historical as well as contemporary context, and a better understanding of its relationship with other societies and faiths.

The fellowships will be based at the Institute of Ismaili Studies, London, UK. The first one will commence in Spring 2002 and the second one in Summer 2002. They will be tenable for one year. The fellowship stipend will be commensurate with the qualification and experience of the candidates.
