The Department of Arabic & Middle East Studies, University of St. Andrews, is inviting applications for one PhD Studentship (The Honeyman Studentship) beginning in September 2002. The Studentship will provide funding of up to Sterling £ 5,000 per year in year one, for 3 years. The amount awarded will rise each year in line with rises in tuition fees and standard maintenance grants. Other awards to the successful Student will be taken into account in assessing the need for the full =£ 5,000.

Research Areas: Areas of research appropriate for the Studentship are:-
Arabic literature, classical and modern; Arabic literary translation; comparative literature.
Islamic thought; Quranic studies.
Islamic history; modern Middle East history and economic history; international relations and politics of the Middle East.
Progress Report: The Honeyman Student will be expected to show satisfactory progress year by year, failing which the award may be terminated.

THE SENATOR JERAHMIEL S. AND CAROLE S. GRAFSTEIN CHAIR IN MEDIEVAL JEWISH STUDIES
The Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations invites applications and nominations for the endowed Grafstein Chair in Medieval Jewish Studies. The holder of the Chair will be an already established scholar at the associate or full professor level. Research areas of special interest include medieval Jewish theology and philosophy; Kabbalah and early Jewish mysticism; and/or classical Jewish Biblical exegesis. The appointment date is July 1, 2002, and the successful candidate will teach courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels. These courses will be fully integrated into the Department's curriculum as well as the undergraduate program in Jewish Studies and the graduate program of the Centre for Medieval Studies.

scientific interrelations between Europe and Islam during the period 1300-1800

9-month fellowship carries a stipend up to $32,000, with benefits including a

Oberlin College invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in the College of Arts and Sciences in the Middle East/North Africa (MENA) region, from the mid-19th century to the present. The initial appointment to this position will be for a term of four years, beginning Fall Semester 2002, and will carry the rank of Assistant Professor or higher.
The incumbent must be able to provide a broad coverage of the historical, cultural, political and social trends in the MENA region. Excellent language proficiency in a regional language; training in the region s broader history; extensive experience conducting research in the region; and command of current methods and interdisciplinary approaches in the relevant fields of MENA, are expected. The incumbent will be located in an appropriate disciplinary department or program and will teach five courses annually, including introductory, intermediate, and advanced undergraduate courses. He or she will also be expected to participate in the full range of faculty responsibilities, including academic advising, service on committees, and sustained scholarly research and/or other creative work appropriate to the position. Among the qualifications desired for the appointment is the Ph.D. degree (in hand or expected by Fall Semester 2002). Candidates must demonstrate interest and potential excellence in undergraduate teaching. Successful teaching experience at the college level is desirable.

The Institute of Ismaili Studies was established in 1977 with the object of promoting scholarship and learning on Islam, in the historical as well as contemporary context, and a better understanding of its relationship with other societies and faiths.
The fellowships will be based at the Institute of Ismaili Studies, London, UK. The first one will commence in Spring 2002 and the second one in Summer 2002. They will be tenable for one year. The fellowship stipend will be commensurate with the qualification and experience of the candidates.
